We’ve all been there: lying awake at 3 am, replaying a conversation from yesterday, or getting lost in a spiral of “what if” scenarios. In Western terms, we often put these feelings down to anxiety, stress, or a tired brain.
But in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this restless mental state is seen through a different lens—one that connects your mind directly to an organ you might not expect: the Spleen.
In TCM, your Spleen isn’t just a physical organ; it’s a vital energetic system responsible for more than just digestion. Its primary job is to transform and transport food and fluid into the energy (Qi) and nourishment (Blood) that your entire body and mind need.
So, where does overthinking come in?
Think of your Spleen as the librarian of your body. It takes in all the information you consume— not just food, but thoughts, feelings, and worries—and organizes them into a usable, clear form. When your Spleen is healthy and strong, your thoughts are clear, your focus is sharp, and you can concentrate without your mind wandering.
But when the Spleen’s energy is weak, it can’t do this job effectively. The information and thoughts pile up, becoming jumbled and unprocessed. This leads to the very symptoms we associate with an overactive mind:
The Spleen has an especially close relationship with your Heart. According to TCM, the Spleen is the main source of the Blood that nourishes your Heart. A healthy Heart houses a calm and clear spirit (Shen).
When your Spleen is weakened by too much worry, it can’t produce enough Blood. This deficiency can then disturb your Heart’s spirit, leading to feelings of anxiety, restlessness, and a lack of mental peace, particularly at night. This is why a day of overthinking can so often lead to a night of insomnia.
The good news is that TCM offers a beautiful, holistic way to bring your Spleen back into balance.
